First and foremost; Vinny knew how to play keyboards and could read sheet music, so his demo was plausible.

Bill Graham was still alive in 1990, The Band had commitments to be fullfilled.

There was a rehersal, three guy's Vinny included, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters (possibly more soulful than Vince) demoed, but they started Estimated and he got lost on the changes, (easy-to-do!).

There was tremendous pressure to keep feeding the cash machine. $50 Million a year (gross, not net) fed many.

Look, you don't replace Brent Mydland, Keith Godchaux or Ron McKernan, you get lucky based on your Kharma, and the Dead had Mojo Kharma from 1969- 1995.

Face it, Rock n Roll died the evening Lennon was gunned down, and buried two year later with the advent of MTV.

These guy's just pushed the envelope 15 more years, because they could!

How many? Just curious. We always hear about the huge numbers of people the Dead were supporting, how that generated pressure, etc, but really ... anyone know the size of the support staff by '90 whose paychecks relied on those tours?

Dave Grohl? Really? So, he went from drums to guitar and keyboards as well? Multi-talented guy.

Any commitment can be broken . Hopefully for a 'good' reason . I don't care who you are .

Interesting. Never heard the Dave Grohl thing. I believe Pete Sears was auditioned and melvin was not considered because he didn't have the vocals.
